Background
Valmiera Secondary School No 2 is the only secondary school for Russian speaking minorities in Valmiera disctrict, Latvia. The education is bilingual.
There are three educational institutions joined in one - a kindergarten, a secondary school and an evening (shift) school.
In 1944 a Russian school was founded in Valmiera. Students could get the 7 year education. In 1950 the school got the status of the Secondary school, with the first graduation in 1954. The Russian population in Valmiera grew and soon one school was not enough. In Valmiera Secondary School No 4 were open groups for Russian speaking students, but then, in 1989 a new building was built for the school, where Russian students from Valmiera Secondary Schools No 4 and No 2 were joined. Those times it was the biggest school in Valmiera with more than thousand students.
When Latvia regained independency, situation changed and many students left the country, Soon the premises were too large for the school and reforms began. First a kindergarten was open, later an evening (shift) school.
We are the only Russian school not only in Valmiera disctrict, but in all Vidzemes region, so many students come from nearest towns and villages.
We are not a closed community, we are a part of local community. Fully integrated in Latvian culture, we also keep Russian traditions live.
At the moment there are about 400 students , mostly from russian and mixed russian - latvian families, as well as many other nationalities.
